Archbishop Thomas Gullickson, the American-born Apostolic Nuncio in Bern, Switzerland, advertised on his blog a video in which Brian Holdsworth, a Catholic convert and web-designer in Edmonton, Canada, speaks about his first attendance at a Traditional Latin Mass on Christ the King Sunday with his wife and five children.
They Still Are Pious
The first thing striking Holdsworth was how – quote – “prayerful” the atmosphere was when they arrived, “There was no chatter. The people that were there were there to seek God in prayer.” In the old days, instead “prayerful”, Holdsworth would have said “pious” or “devout”.
A Unified Church
Holdsworth perceived the Latin mass community like a - quote – “real body of believers with a common vision and approach to God.” He adds, “I’ve only rarely felt that way at another mass.”
Active Participation
One of the great ironies Holdsworth noticed was that everyone was very intentionally participating. He reminds us that the Novus Ordo was enforced with the promise that it would increase participation. However, Holdsworth notices, participation in your typical Catholic parish is scattered at best.
An Experience of Unity
After having experienced the unity of the Old Mass, Holdsworth notices that “having a hundred different approaches to God does not strike me as a good diversity”. He points out that in every day’s life there is enough individualism and focus on oneself that mainly leads to discord.
A Bubble Of Peace and Serenity
Holdsworth’s wife said after Mass that she felt like she was in a bubble of peace and serenity while the outside world was composed of chaos, anxiety, and spectacle. She discovered a piece of heaven where you could lose yourself in stillness and prayer.
A Big Question
The couple expected the Old Mass to be different, but “not that different.” Their big question, “How did we take something that had been in use for hundreds of years and, with the wave of a hand, cast it aside and have forced on us something so drastically different which is not delivering on any of its promises?"
A Masterpiece
Archbishop Gullickson calls Brian's video a “masterpiece” which validates Benedict XVI's intuition that the Novus Ordo should be inspired by the Roman Rite as the way forward.” Gullickson asks people to take time for this video. Quote, “Dispose yourself to accept the challenge to go on a quest for a future which could come sooner were we so better disposed.»
